THIS MONTH IN MUSIC:
A cassette put out by the band I fronted in the late 80's (Otto Bootzman: The Legacy of No One) was listed on eBay as "Very Early Beki Hemingway!" and actually sold for $12.50 plus shipping. I think it was originally $5 or $6 so that's a good markup for our little ep recorded right here in Denver in 1989(?)
Melanie and I went to see Newton Faulkner at an in-store performance at Bart's CDs in Boulder. It was a spur of the moment decision based on the fact that we both like his single "Dream Catch Me" and I happened to hear a KBCO Studio C performance/announcement as I was driving home from a job the other day. So...we didn't have a clue about Newton, but we were "Newton-curious."
After all, I live on Newton Street, love Fig Newtons, and know lots of Olivia Newton-John lyrics. Anyway, off we went.
It was well worth the trip. A very good time! As it turns out, Newton Faulkner is a UK pop star who has abundant dreadlocks. The store wasn't too crowded so we asked for a pic:
After getting our picture taken, we realized that this photo bore a striking similarity to one we had taken in November 2006 in an alley behind the Olympia Theater in Dublin with our good buddy Duke Special.
Could it be that we have a penchant for dreadlocked UK pop stars? It seems we have started a collection. If anyone knows of more dreadlocked UK pop stars, please leave a comment here so we can add it to our list of people to get our picture taken with (Melanie stage left, and Beki stage right of course).
CD PURCHASE: BIG BLUE BALL (Peter Gabriel/Karl Wallinger/Various) = AWESOME!

That's weird about the Otto Bootzman cassette, also that someone bought any cassette tape at all! I'd like to make a snied comment, but I have some 80's skeletons in my closet
From the alleys of Dublin to the Pearl St Mall in Boulder, we love our dreadlocked singers!
melanie
how could you have the exact same pose! Wow that is pure talent!!!
from weez!
Wow.... talk about deja vu!!!
Beki, this is hysterically funny.
You see, today I was trying to process my vast MP3 archive, something I've been cobbling together for nearly 15 years. I used to Ebay's largest seller of Christian music, so anything that came through my hands got ripped... if I had the time or inclination.
My own history was such that I had connections with True Tunes, Etc. (I worked there in the late 80's) and when I shifted over to Ebay, John Thompson asked me if I was interested in his garage / demo / scuttlebutt tape collection. I bought it from him with the sole purpose of archiving it's wealth of unknown bands.
Thus --- today I went looking for Otto Bootzman information, because i had already long sold the tape.... in the very auction you mentioned!!! THAT WAS ME!!! ROFL. I know it was, because I had to sell the TTe tapes to fund becoming a missionary and the date of your blog-post is exactly the timing when I started selling them. (I left America for Taiwan in February 2009, and I've been here ever since.)
I still have the songs ripped to MP3 (if you ever want them that is) but unfortunately the guy who did them for me was lazy and failed to label any of the song titles. hence why I was out scouting information... in hopes... well... yea... no luck.
I have an EP and The legacy of No One archive if you want them... just let me know where to send them.
And.... you had a wonderful singing voice, even back then.
I just saw your comment from 10 months ago! (oops!) I actually have since been given mp3s of The Legacy of No One by Clay Bixel, who could probably work out a scan of the cover if you need credits. He's on Facebook working on a new project as J. Clay Bixel.
